The Upper Mustang Trek transports you to a hidden sanctuary in Nepal, often referred to as the last forbidden kingdom, which remains a highly restricted region. This extraordinary trek holds a distinguished position among Nepal’s Top 10 Trekking Trails. However, embarking on the Upper Mustang Trek requires a special trekking permit and mandates the guidance of a government-appointed trekking guide. Since its opening to foreigners in 1992, access to Upper Mustang has been limited. Travelers take the northern route from Kagbeni to enter this captivating region. The Nepal Government’s Department of Immigration has issued only a limited number of permits since then.
The Upper Mustang Trek presents an awe-inspiring journey through a paradise adorned with Buddhist monasteries, Stupas, Chhortens, Mani walls, Prayer walls, and breathtaking landscapes. Known as the Mini Tibet of Nepal, Upper Mustang is a splendid Himalayan desert valley. It frequently garners attention in both national and international news outlets, captivating readers with its natural wonders.
At an elevation of 3,950 meters, the trek ventures to Lo Manthang, the old capital of Upper Mustang. Here, you’ll encounter warm-hearted locals residing in scattered settlements, embracing you with their hospitality and friendly demeanor. The region’s arid terrain, resembling a desert with its lack of trees and barren land, has earned Upper Mustang the moniker of the Mountain Desert. Surrounded by majestic mountains such as the Dhaulagiri massif, Annapurna, Nilgiri, and other snow-capped peaks, the trek is a truly enigmatic experience. Exploring the ancient Royal Palace, the Amchi museum, and the local school in Lo-Manthang adds further significance to this remarkable adventure.
