Dhorpatan, a small settlement located around 2900m south of the majestic Dhaulagiri Range, is predominantly inhabited by Kham Magar and Tibetan refugees who rely on agriculture, animal husbandry, and tourism for their livelihoods. Dhorpatan is also renowned for the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, spanning 1325 square kilometers. Established in 1987 and endorsed by the Nepalese government, it is the only hunting reserve in Nepal, governed by strict regulations. The region boasts marshlands known as “dhor” and forested territories called “patan,” enhancing the natural beauty of the area with a diverse range of flora and fauna. As you ascend to the higher reaches of Dhorpatan, you’ll encounter snow-capped peaks year-round and have the chance to spot musk deer, red pandas, snow leopards, koklass pheasants, cheer pheasants, impheyan pheasants, and various reptiles. Crossing the Jaljala Pass (3386m) leads you to the mystical land of Dolpo, where peace and tranquility permeate the atmosphere. Dolpo is home to the magnificent Shey-Phoksundo Lake, Nepal’s deepest lake, attracting trekkers from around the globe.
