The Mundum Trail or Mundum Trek is a special pathway created by the government in 2018 in the far northeastern part of Nepal. This trail is away from the usual paths that people follow. To start this trek, you need to take a long twelve-hour bus ride from Kathmandu to Diktel, which is a place higher up in the mountains.
A company called Chamlang Expeditions offers this trek at a good price. They give you a map on your phone that’s updated with the latest information. They also make a plan that can change a bit based on what you want. The Mundum Trail is also sometimes called a “ridge trail” because you walk along the ridges of the mountains. This lets you see the snowy mountain chains and beautiful fields on the sides. Since this is a new path, not many people have walked here before. You get to walk through grasslands, wild areas, and fields. You can see amazing sunrises in the morning and really pretty sunsets in the evening. Since there aren’t any hotels or lodges along the way, you’ll need to camp outside.
Once you get to Diktel by bus, the trail goes through different places like Chakhewa, Dhotre, Maiyung, Rawadhap, and Silichho. Silichho is a really high point where you can see a lot of mountains like Everest, Lhotse, Mera, and others. There’s a holy lake called Salpa Pokhari that’s really pure and important to a group of people called the Kirat Community. Silichho Peak is also considered holy.
After going up to Silichho Peak, you’ll head back to Hans Pokhari and then to Suntale and Bhojpur, which is where the trek ends. From Bhojpur, you can take a flight back to Kathmandu, the capital city. But if you want, you can choose to take a flight from a different place called Tumlingtar. There’s a route that goes down from Salpa Bhanjyang to Tumlingtar. There’s another option to go to a place called Mahakulung, which has three pretty villages: Gudel, Bung, and Chheskam. You can take a bus from Mahakulung to Kathmandu, but it takes about twelve hours.
