The Upper Dolpo region, also known as the “Abandoned Kingdom,” is situated in the barren alpine territory between the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri Ranges. This far-flung northwest Himalayan region of Nepal remains one of the remotest and least explored trekking destinations in the country. Considered an adventurous camping trek, this journey takes you through the distant alpine wilderness of the Himalayas, offering breathtaking views of the Kanjirowa Range. The region is inhabited by native Tibetan nomads who have settled here for generations. According to legends, a Buddhist Guru discovered this otherworldly land over 1700 years ago during his spiritual quest.
Due to its challenging topography, the Dolpo Region has remained isolated from the influence of modernity. It was only in 1989 that the region opened up to tourism. Trekking through alpine meadows, valleys, and barren hillsides adorned with simple and picturesque rural settlements creates an exceptional experience. Dolpo has long been a stronghold of Buddhist and Bon Po religions, earning its reputation as one of the highest human-inhabited lands. This mystical and spiritually rich region is home to Phoksundo National Park, located at an elevation of 3611m and covering an area of 3555km². The park serves as a sanctuary for endangered species such as snow leopards, grey wolves, musk deer, blue sheep, gorals, Tibetan sheep, leopards, jackals, Himalayan tahrs, and black bears. The region also boasts a diverse range of plant species, including rhododendrons, caragana, shrubs, salix, juniper, white Himalayan birch, silver fir, blue pine, hemlock, pine, spruce, cedar, poplar, and mountain bamboo. The mesmerizing Phoksundo Lake, reaching a depth of 145m and spanning an area of 4.94km², stands as the major attraction. Additionally, the 11th-century Shey Gompa and the 800-year-old Thasung Gompa add a touch of ancient marvel to the region.
