The adventure begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu (1400m) to Phaplu (7,918 feet or 2,413m). From there, you’ll embark on a short visit to Silichho Peak (4156m) and Salpa Lake (3500m), before entering the enchanting Khongmadingma Valley (4065m) that leads you to the majestic Mera Peak (6476m). The trail concludes at Lukla (2860m).
You have two options to reach Mahakulung, the starting point of the trek. You can either enjoy a twelve-hour bus drive or take a quick 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Phaplu. As you begin your hike towards Mahakulung (1900m), you’ll encounter the vibrant Kulung Community, consisting of three villages: Gudel, Bung, and Chheskam. The trail meanders through lush jungles, serene pastures, and quaint settlements inhabited by the Khaling and other ethnic groups. Along the way, you’ll pass through picturesque settlements like Chyalsa (2561m) and Budidada (19023m).
Mahakulung, predominantly inhabited by the Kulung people, offers a rich cultural experience and a diverse range of flora and fauna. Additionally, you can choose to extend your itinerary by three days to explore Silichho (4156m) and Salpa (4000m) in Mahakulung. Silicho Peak is a sacred site believed to be the dwelling place of gods and provides a magnificent viewpoint to observe Everest (8848m), Amadablam (6812m), Lhotse (8516m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), Makalu (8463m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Nuptse (7855m), Chamlang (7319m), and more than 22 other peaks. During the ascent to Silichho, you’ll be captivated by the serene Salpa Lake (4000m), revered for its healing properties and tranquility.
Continuing on, the trail takes you through Muddhi (2130m), Dobhan (2723m), and Watelma (2905m), ultimately leading to the picturesque Khongmadingma Valley (4065m). From there, you’ll embark on the thrilling journey to Mera Peak (6476m), with Amphu Lapcha (5845m) left aside. After conquering Mera Peak, the trail guides you through a diverse range of flora and fauna as you pass through Khare (5045m), Kothe (3691m), and Chhutanga (4358m) on your way to Lukla (2860m), where this unforgettable trekking experience comes to a close.
